As Melbourne gears up for the full-blown festival season we asked the team at ABC Shop what delights they had in store should you want to have a (shock horror) quiet weekend in to rest and revive before attending about a zillion events around town.
They suggested something that might inspire you to dream of adventuring in far away places; ‘Kevin McCloud’s Grand Tour of Europe’ series. This is not just a tour that happens to be “grand”. A “grand tour” was a traditional trip taken in the 1600’s to 1800’s by upper class Europeans in the days before rail and road travel was easy. The trip is akin these days to our gap year backpacking around Europe though that doesn’t sound quite so glamorous.
They tell us the British presenter delves “behind the facades of Europe’s greatest buildings, ruins and cities!” He also gets off the beaten track to visit brothels, bathhouses and backwards bars which may be even more intriguing for some.
