The word “Phi” is often referred to as part of the “golden ratio”; a formula that many artists and scientists over history have discovered to be the most aesthetically pleasing when witnessed in their work or nature. By dubbing her latest collection Eternal Phi, Kit Willow may be reflecting her desire that it will be beautiful forever. With a multitude of jaw-droppingly gorgeous Willow designs featured recently at New York Fashion Week we think her hopes have been realised.
The inspirations for Eternal Phi are the seas and inhabitants of the Great Barrier Reef. Yet the reef is far from being referenced literally. The pieces are what we imagine that only the chicest residents of Atlantis would be sporting should their long lost futuristic city rise from the depths. Included are zigzagged hemlines, anemone-like pleats and folds and gently rippling ruffles. The effect is typically confident and feminine but with an underlying edge. Like much sea-life, the transfixing creatures who wear the designs are surely stunning but beware of trying to touch them. The colour palette Willow has used ranges from azure blue and burnt orange to pearly whites and aged golds. Mottled digital prints and antique metallic rope detailing complete the marine picture.
The collection embraces the relevant current trends such as the tendency for structured shoulders and sheer panelling. Over embellishment is also featured in the highlight pieces of the collection. Short frocks and skirt suits are studded with thousands of shell buttons that create a pearlescent armour effect for the fashion-savvy and ladies who lunch. It seems under the sea is the place to be seen this season.
