Softly does it in the fashion stakes at Moonee Valley on Cox Plate Day as the Fashions on the Field judges favour muted pinks, beiges and creams with just a sprinkling of popping colour. Introducing an innovative four categories for the first time in 2009, the Melbourne’s GPO Fashions on the Field were more inclusive producing a competitive field filled with everything from serious fashion and creative expression to silly, just-for-fun threads.

The winners on the day were Angela Menz (Head Turning Hats), Joanne Donovan (Members’ Racewear), Jane Cameron (Classic Racewear) and Lauren Andrews (Young Contemporary Racewear). Andrews went on to win the overall prize presented by Richard Reid and Kelly Landry -as she had at the Caulfield Fashion Stakes a week earlier- in a pale pink lace shift dress with oversized rose headpiece and a pair of to-die-for frothy tulle stilettos.

Our highlights of the day were the addition of sun-smart parasols as accessories, two frocks constructed entirely from balloons and the men really getting in on the action either in serious style or in a colourful tongue-in-cheek fashion. Naturally we also loved spotting the fashionable types trackside such as our friends Paris Kyne, Richard Nylon, Peter Jago, Kerry Stanley, Lillian Frank and gorgeous nicolangela designer Nicole Williams.
