Metalicus has long been the go to Australian label for comfort without compromise on style. Their stretchy, loungewear pieces and one size stretches to fit all approach has carved its own unique niche in wardrobes across the country. Their Spring Summer 2009 season, while still having a focus on comfort, offers up yet more fashion (as opposed to strictly basic) pieces that sample a diverse range of current trends. Yet the latest collection still retains that quintessential unfussy, easy feel that has made the label iconic.

We mentioned a multitude of trends featuring, and there is a refreshing ‘pick and mix’ quality inherent at Metalicus for SS09. We spotted everything from mottled tie-dye, edgy peek-a-boo cut outs, several different kinds of ruffles and graphic block panels. Latin American dance has an influence in the delicate tiered frills on the seat of the ‘Swinging Salsa’ dress and the calf length flamenco styling of the ‘Frill Seeker Dress’. The nouveau-craftster look is even catered to; with felt blossoms resting at the shoulder of their ‘Free as a Bird’ tank dress lending a handmade feel.

Texture-wise there is also a multitude of tactile lace, raised crosshatch and swirl patterns as a foil to the flat, soft stretch cottons. Colours run the gamut from neutral nettle, liquorice and oatmeal to monotone blocks to bright tangerine and raspberry hues. The favoured shape this season is the tank. Whether in top or dress form, we spied a dozen different varieties. Tanks fit in well with their casual ‘just throw it on and still manage to look instantly stylish’ aesthetic. One of our absolute favourite pieces out of the whole collection is the ‘Save the Day’ tank dress. It has a feminine, gently ruffled opening at the front which, when worn layered, looks like rose petals unfolding – how poetic for springtime dressing! This seems like a collection we could really live in all summer long.
