Find the fastest way to get die-hard motor sports fans talking about fashion? What a challenge! Banishing spandex from (barely) covering up Grid Girl flesh at the 2010 Melbourne Grand Prix would be no mean feat. Yet title sponsor QANTAS commissioned leading Australian designer Kit Willow to do just that. The resulting uniforms combine sexy elements such as black leather, sheer silk, corset-detailed knee high boots and plunging necklines but still retain a more demure appeal. Kit Willow explains her task in re-envisioning the Grid Girl outfit was to “sympathise with the previous Grand Prix girl, while also making it fresh and new and injecting the elegance into the look. So understanding what has been and understanding what will be”.
