Brisk, breezy strolls under bare limbed trees now require multiple layers of coats, jacket, scarves and gloves; there is no other season when you are required to dress so chicly. The obsession with tanning and maintaining our ‘bikini bodies’ (a terrifying term if there ever was one) can also now lapse. Instead we can indulge with a bountiful bowl of piping hot brothy noodles from Ramen Ya or Ca de Vin’s lamb shanks and creamy mash (with, joyously, a bottle of red). Or else we can enjoy rugging up in or staying inside by the fire with a selection of these winter warmers below. They may become among our new favourite things about the new season. What are your favourite things about Winter?

Designers Lisa Gorman and Akira Isogawa have stepped away from their usual medium of choice – fabric – to create pieces for Inside Out Magazine’s 10th anniversary issue Art Auction. Dozen of creative people are involved from fashion designers, celebs, comedians to stylists and a variety of artists with all proceeds going to HeartKids.

The amazing Akira Isogawa raised over $1400 with this mixed media work. The series of three pieces incorporates antique obi and kimono material and glass beads into watercolour fashion illustrations. We covet it to adorn our stylish office walls.

Lisa Gorman has created this king and queen sculpture from recycled materials which she says forces creativity. They could be very cute displayed on a mantle piece in a shabby chic styled room. Gorman’s work is still open for bidding.

Wednesday night saw Melbourne’s GPO designers MIMCO, Gorman and Manning Cartell take to the runway for InStyle’s L’Oreal Paris Runway event.

MIMCO showcased long strings of chunky beads and pearls, glittering clutches (some with interesting decoration such as gold snakes) and leather handbags in every size imaginable. Large rings and flower shaped bracelets made an appearance along with belts with layers of black beads and chains across the hip.

Gorman teamed chunky coloured knits with sheer fabrics displaying polkadots, sequin star designs, stripes and leather mini skirts. Their accessories included bright pompom balls and scarves that resembled paper chains.

Manning Cartell blended tough with feminine with silk fabrics draping across the body, fuschia and black, fur coats, hard Balmain inspired shoulders on structured jackets, leather skirts, metallics, digital prints and tailored mini dresses.

Trends at the show

The military trend reared its head in the collections of Karen Walker and Lucette. Karen Walker with their double breasted coat with large gold button detail and Lucette with big buttons up the sleeves of theirs. Karen Walker also experimented with bold prints, some digital and other reminiscent of the 1970s. Lucette used fringing and sequins as embellishment as well as using leather in various forms (skirt, shorts and jackets).

Tartan was used to create a jacket with a fur collar for Arabella Ramsay who also touched on the use of polkadots which we saw in Gorman’s collection. Overall, Arabella’s theme evoked a feeling of ‘urban cowgirl’, mixing checks with earthy tones and leather bomber jackets.

Obus featured oversized knits with coloured stripes in greens, pinks and oranges with socks layered up the leg over ribbed tights, which gave the collection a slight South American flavour. Then, in contrast, we saw delicate pink silk tops, floral prints and tailored blazers with piping.

Yeojin Bae went for an elegant tailored collection with structured bustiers and dresses, often with lace panelling. Other than typical winter colours such as grey and black, this collection had splashes of orange, fuschia and pale pink. She also referenced a key trend in the trenchcoat, but made it unique by using wool and a waist tie to create a softer version of the classic coat.

It will be their first ever flagship store and in honour of the news we’ve assembled our weekend style outfit around our favourite piece from their 16th collection ‘Blur’. LIFEwithBIRD’s draped ‘One Minute to Go’ top is offset by a Gorman ‘Petal Skirt’ and reigned in with an Acne ‘Balance Belt’. Accessories include the ‘Enchanted’ heel from Hussy and ‘Tassle Gem Drop’ earrings by Mimco. It’s a graphic, avant garde look that relies on shape rather than over-adornment to stand out. For more details on when and where LIFEwithBIRD will be opening stay tuned.

During December, whenever you shop at Gorman you will also find in your hot little hand a scrumptious Green & Blacks organic chocolate bar. Hidden inside the bars, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory-style, are 5 winning tickets. Each lucky ticket holder wins a new $1500 wardrobe from Gorman and an organic hamper choc-full (literally) of Green & Blacks . We’re picking out our new wardrobe as we speak.

As part of this delicious pairing, Lisa Gorman has designed unique Christmas mobiles that you’ll see hung up in stores. Over 500 ornaments were fashioned origami-style from used Green & Blacks wrappers. That’s much smarter than strings of popcorn and paper lanterns.

Currently, Gorman have lots of fab Christmas ideas in-store from their own limited edition print ballet flats, to Nicole Ritchie’s House of Harlow jewellery line, to an absolutely stunning Tivi wood-grain clutch purse that we certainly have our eye on (Santa are you listening?) There are some good excuses to enter to see if you will soon have one of the golden tickets.
