It’s coming. You can not avoid it. So just give in already and embrace the sugar coated occasion that is Valentine’s Day. In the spirit of the day we have curated a collection of all things rouge. The ‘Kirrily’ frock by Leona Edmiston is sure to set hearts a-flutter while the raspberry jelly filled chocolates from Cacao are the way to any man or woman’s heart (unless they are one of those odd people who *gasp* don’t like chocolate). Our other object of desire for the weekend are the chic Comme des Garcons leather pouch from Fat, the silky Christies camisole from im, Karen Millen snake peeptoes and this sweet bow clip by Mimco.

Summer means that it is time to inject some juicy, cheery colours into our outfits, even for after five events. Now while we don’t suggest you dress in it from head to toe; an injection of peach, guava or coral into your outfit can be an homage to that perfect summer sunset hue. This collection features Gorman’s Tiger Cardi, a pendant from Georg Jensen called Moonlight, Alexi Freeman’s Silk and Mesh dress, a Spiral Shibori Scarf vest from Akira, Marit flats from Camper and knickers from the Precieux Talisman collection from im boutique.

Melbourne Cup Day is one of the most important days on the annual calendar for fashion-savvy Melburnians. Only on your wedding day, at big job interviews or possibly during fashion week do we put so much effort into our look. Melbourne Cup Day is traditionally the day you should wear you best and boldest Spring racing outfit so regal purple is the core inspiration here. Yet the look is demure enough to wear to Oaks Day if that is the day you’d prefer to head into Flemington. As the only fashionably named horse in the big race, we’ll be barracking for “Harris Tweed” in the Cup.

PS If you feel like avoiding the racing fever entirely how about a spot of shopping? We’ll be open from 11am on Melbourne Cup Day.

Weekend Style – All that Jazz

Watching Caroline O’Connor perform a medley of musical tunes at the Racing In Style Ladies’ Luncheon today inspired us to look towards the Jazz era with a touch of art deco style for our last minute Cox Plate outfits. This versatile look could easily be translated for next week’s Derby Day also with its black and white traditions.

Weekend Style #2 – Got the Blues

Dressing up is a sure fire antidote to feeling down when the tail end of wintry weather is blowing up a rain storm and messing up your weekend plans (along with your formerly precisely coiffed hairstyle). We recommend just heading out anyway, finding a nice bar with a fireplace and playing pretend that Spring is already at full force. This outfit is designed to be a crowd pleaser; whether you are set for a night out with friends and a few martinis, heading to a special celebration or looking forward to a new dinner date.

Melbourne Spring Fashion Week Wrap

Away from the glamour of multiple ‘Fashion at Altitude’ runway parades our labels participated in quite a few other highlight events during the past week.

nicolangela kindly participated in Miss Green’s Garden Party. This inaugural event saw almost 20 designers donate an outfit to be auctioned off in aid of their chosen charities. The catches? The outfit must be suitable to wear to the Spring Racing Carnival and it had to be display eco-friendly design. nicolangela’s eco-chic contribution was their “Willow” frock with “Pricilla” bolero in a turquoise and chartreuse hand-painted silk combination. It was a ladylike afternoon filled with cupcakes, iced tea and guilt free fashion.

We were also lucky to be involved in Fashionising’s High Fashion, High Tea at the opulent Silk Road. Designs from Hussy and im strutted the inventively styled runway, while Hussy also dressed the elegant hostesses for the afternoon. Fashion topped off with scones and pastries? Heaven.

Many of our in-house labels also popped up in the official Designer Series parades at the Town Hall. Often the most anticipated events of the week, if you happened to be a lucky ticket holder, you may have watched as the amazing Akira, Gorman, Arthur Galan AG, Wayne Cooper and Fat graced the catwalk among Australia’s fashion design elite.

Melbourne Spring Fashion Week Opening Party

Last night a who’s who of Melbourne fashion gathered at fortyfivedownstairs to officially launch Melbourne Spring Fashion week for 2009 with a glittering soiree. The industrial space was decked out in opposing trends of the upcoming season; one side was chic black and neutral, the other an explosion of bright Summer colour. The centre piece of the room was a display of pieces by Australian design leaders like MaterialByProduct, Alexi Freeman, Nicola Finetti and Ginger and Smart. Major Robert Doyle and Spring Fashion Week ambassador Jessica Hart (in a drop-dead gorgeous, heavy metal, silver Aurelio Costarella minidress) were the guest of honour.

Melbourne’s GPO is so excited to be a bronze partner at this year’s Melbourne Spring Fashion Week. We’ve already mentioned the special events we have in store for you like our two Fashion at Altitude parades, our exclusive VIP parade, Fashion Illustration classes for beginners and our special shopping day this Wednesday. Apart from our official in-house events many of our gorgeous designer labels can also be found elsewhere throughout the city during the week. Here’s a selection for the MSFW 2009 program;

Fat are also running a series of ‘Fat Loves…’ mini-events in store and online over the week;

Fat Loves Music. On Wednesday you can collect a free mix cd from Fat stores.
Fat Loves Art. From the 1st to the 6th September Fat stores will have different artist exhibitions on display. At Melbourne’s GPO, road kill artist and jeweller Emily Valentine will be the star of the show.
Fat Loves Exhibitions. On Thursday Fat hosts a limited edition T-Shirt exhibition at the No Vacancy gallery from 6pm.
Fat Loves Literature. Finally, on Saturday, Fat’s online blog will have a series of guest bloggers writing for them.
