Thank you to the many Melbourne’s GPO Lovers and our new social network friends who came to our ‘Fashion at Altitude’ parades this week. We loved chatting with, catching up and meeting you all! Melbourne’s GPO is so excited to be a bronze partner at this year’s Melbourne Spring Fashion Week. We’ve already mentioned the special events we have in store for you like our two Fashion at Altitude parades, our exclusive VIP parade, Fashion Illustration classes for beginners and our special shopping day this Wednesday. Apart from our official in-house events many of our gorgeous designer labels can also be found elsewhere throughout the city during the week. Here’s a selection for the MSFW 2009 program;

Fat are also running a series of ‘Fat Loves…’ mini-events in store and online over the week;

Fat Loves Music. On Wednesday you can collect a free mix cd from Fat stores.
Fat Loves Art. From the 1st to the 6th September Fat stores will have different artist exhibitions on display. At Melbourne’s GPO, road kill artist and jeweller Emily Valentine will be the star of the show.
Fat Loves Exhibitions. On Thursday Fat hosts a limited edition T-Shirt exhibition at the No Vacancy gallery from 6pm.
Fat Loves Literature. Finally, on Saturday, Fat’s online blog will have a series of guest bloggers writing for them.

The Age’s Fashion Editor Janice Breen Burns also chats about the launch in her latest piece The Long and Short of Spring Fashion;

“In the bitter cold, boutiques both sides of the [Bourke Street] mall were doing slow business in the kind of spring frocks teens adore. But this lull won’t last. There will be flesh bared in spring; the racks foretell it, and you can bet your Spring Fashion Week tickets on it.

Above the mall, however, on a lofty level of the elegant GPO building, a snappy little chap in sharp dark suit was crooning about fashion’s emerging flipside: souped-up glamour. As four tall young models swayed gracefully along the colonnade in ankle-grazing gowns by Akira, Leona Edmiston, Lisa Ho and Manning Cartell, singer Paris Zachariou spruiked next week’s Spring Fashion Week shows, Frank Sinatra style: ”Tall and tan and young and lovely, the girl from the GPO came walking … ”

The young women’s hair was teased and rolled into extravagant 1950s-style bouffant chignons fastened with bright, curling feathers. In certain circles, there will be beauty and glamour this spring; you can bank on that too.” – Janice Breen Burns

- Two ‘Fashion at Altitude’ runway parades – BOOKED OUT

- Fashion drawing classes with the Whitehouse Institute of Design

You may also experience ‘the city’s finest shopping’, special offers and designer in store appearances in the elegant surrounds of Melbourne’s GPO during our special MSFW shopping day on Wednesday 2nd September from 10am – 8pm.

With Melbourne Spring Fashion Week approaching you may be inspired to try your hand at designing gorgeous garments yourself. Why not get a taste of the first step to seeing your creations come alive with this introduction to fashion drawing?

Learn how to draw the Fashion Figure, with Kristie Coakley from Whitehouse Institute of Design Australia. Examine and learn the techniques used to draw the fashion figure for fashion design illustrations. Discover how different poses can best show off your design. Explore a range of rendering techniques used to embellish your designs, illustrating tone and texture.

All materials and light refreshments will be provided so don’t miss your chance to be a designer for the night.
