Never underestimate the versatility of a classic, simple overcoat to make an outfit weatherproof or casually chic. Stick to neutral colours, black, grey or blue to get the most wear from your everyday coat be it a trench, peacoat or parka. Since Spring mocks us by being the wettest season in Melbourne you may well have to live in it nearly everyday. Remember it’s what’s on the outside that counts!

Our Style Spy has returned! We love the common “effortless chic” look of these two outfits – however we all know the effortless look takes a lot of thought. Look closely and you’ll find our two smart subjects below have carefully thought about their outfits; from the neutral colour palette that compliments the hero blue jackets, to the length of their pant hems, the addition of just a little texture and right down to their stripy socks.

How amazing do these two lovelies below look? There’s nothing like a statement dress to make the task of accessorising simple. We particularly like the relaxed, untraditional shapes. Hussy’s ‘Enchanted Prowess’ and ‘Midnight Hour’ dresses have similar loose silhouette. They make it look almost too easy.

In the last few weeks the Melbourne weather has kept us guessing, with torrential rain and storms one minute and the heat returning the next. Autumn, with its changing moods, is the perfect time to focus on layering pieces to create a versatile outfit that can take you from cool breezes to warm glimpses of sun, day to night. Below are a couple of examples of layering with sheer tops that we love, or you can take inspiration from Willow’s Eclipse collection with beautiful mesh fabric in blacks and pinks. The girl at right is Mona from Brunch after Breakfast.

One classic cream blouse: worn two ways. Both outfits look casual yet polished, suitable for daytime shopping or lunch dates. Though we personally wouldn’t dream of attempting a high waistline on our jeans, the dark clean denim paired back with the blouse is timeless. And we love, love, love those steel rimmed ankle boots (hint: try exploring Acne for a similar shape).

When we simply can’t face any more basic black Melburnians turn instead to beautiful blues. The cool hue is a little bolder and a little more cheery than our stereotypical uniform but can be just as elegant in silky satin or casual with white spots. It can be tricky to pull of polka dots away from the race track but the young lady below accomplishes the feat effortlessly. There is certainly nothing devilish about these blue dresses.

Whether during winter or summer the steps are the place to soak up some rays with friends or take a moment for some more personal solace (slathered in a good SPF naturally) like our subjects below. We recommend you grab a sweet or savoury crepe from Concorde Creperie under the arches and while the time away.

The unpredictability of Spring at the moment means we have rare patches of warming sunshine in between, blustery winds and plenty of (glorious, wonderful) rain.
